3 Keys for Turning Failure into Feedback to Overcome Fear

Failure is feedback.

At least it always has been for me. I learned a long time ago that if something doesn’t go the way I wanted, it creates an opportunity to make a change and do something different to get a new result the next time.

But I know most entrepreneurs don’t think like me. From my experience working with thousands of entrepreneurs, failure creates a deep-rooted fear that often keeps them from taking the same or new actions to experience a different result.

And, I get it. Fear is either derived from looking backwards or looking ahead. And, if you’re not consciously looking you’ll definitely fall into a pattern of fear.

In this week’s episode of Incredible Factor TV, our creative director Blake asked me a question that stumped me just a tad, check it out:

As I share in the episode, when you’re feeling fear, you have to do three things:

1. Isolate the fear. You see, if the fear is standing alone as an isolated incident, you’ll be able to see it for what it is, a distraction. Fear is never in our present, it is always the result of something we experienced previously or something we think could happen again (because we experienced it previously), but it’s never in the moment.

2. Validate the fear. 9 times out of 10, you won’t be able to find a valid reason in the current moment to feel the fear. And when you can’t validate it, you’ll have to move forward to the third thing.

3. Release the fear’s hold on your ability to move forward. The process of releasing a fear can be very easy but more often that not it’s very hard. We don’t want to let go of the things that aren’t serving us although they add no value. It will take courage to release your fears. And you’ll have to confront them head on since you can’t conquer what you refuse to confront.

So when you’re feeling fear, acknowledge it. Let the fear run its course and when the heightened moment subsides, isolate, validate and release it. When you do, you’ll realize that everything you want is on the other side of the fear and if you boldly walk toward it, you’ll get the satisfaction of using failure as feedback and positioning yourself to do something incredible!
