3 Keys to Keep Social Media From Distracting You as You Build Your Business

Does anyone else feel like every time they turn around, there’s a new social media network or strategy that is all the rage and GUARANTEED to grow your business?

So here’s the thing, social media is not going away. But all of it will not grow your business, and you need to know that upfront so that you don’t believe all the hype that is fed to you on a daily basis. There are tons of social nuisances, depending on the network, that offer more to distract than to grow your business.

This is why I’m so elated to take Suzanne’s question on this week’s episode of Incredible Factor TV, check it out:

“Hi Darnyelle. I’ve been in my business for about 3 years now and I’ve have a major aversion to social media as a way to grow. I feel like it’s just a distraction. Is there any merit to using social media to build your business and if so, help me figure out how to make it work for me.”

As I share in the episode, you CAN grow your business with social media, but it will absolutely take a clear strategy. Here are my best three tips for you to move from distracted to growing your business via social media:

1. Determine the right social media network for you. While it’s true that there are two billion people on social media and it’s likely that your clients are there, are you positive that they are on Facebook looking for you and your services? It’s possible that they are there to share family photos, share memes and have no desire to think about the problem they have (that you claim to solve). You need to know that. If you spend time, energy and money posting and you’re not leveraging the right strategies on Facebook, you’ll only waste time, energy and money. Now, Facebook ads could be a way to turn Facebook into a place where you meet new clients. But, even with ads, you’ll need to test, split test, target and retarget to get a clear sense of which ads are working and which are not. Ask yourself: Which network gets my ideal client’s attention?

2. Look for opportunities to create a system around your chosen social media network. Don’t just post willy nilly. Look at the analytics of your business page to see when your most ideal clients are online. Use tools like HootSuite or Buffer to post when they’ll see them. When you create the system, don’t over post or populate your network; that will tell true users that you don’t get it and it will send them looking away from you and your posts.

3. Pair any online effort with it’s offline counterpart for maximum effectiveness. For every post that gets attention, plan to deepen the connection offline. We still live in a high-touch society and no amount of texting, tweeting or Facebook Live is going to change the need for connection that exists when we level the power of being face to face with people. This is why speaking and networking remain the best ways to build a business.

Now, I want to hear from you. What’s your two cents? What do you do to minimize distractions on social media so that you can leverage the tool to get in front of new clients?
